Ultimately this article will include lists of men's names, women's names, and surnames, including all variant forms. At this time, many of the names still show strong Norse influence, especially seen in the popularity of the names Ollaw (Olaf) and Magnus and in the use of the literal patronymic byname (a byname indicating the bearer's father's name). Almost all of the bynames are used literally. The few clear instances of inherited surnames are by large found only in upper classes, men who, judging from their names, were likely from Scotland, and not native Shetlanders. Women, without exception, did not take their husband's surname upon marriage.
Surnames are listed alphabetically.

A number of foreign tradesmen are referenced in these documents. Most of them are referred to, in the records, as Dutche, but a footnote says that this actually represents Deutsch, i.e., German, not Dutch. Because these names are not indicative of names used by the native Shetlanders, I have listed them separately. When the same person has been referenced under different spellings, I have listed the variants indented below the spelling that is first found in the records.
