Every Sunday, we have waffles for breakfast. Usually our batter makes three whole waffles, but one week, we had just enough left for a smaller fourth one. Unfortunately, we forgot about it, and so the batter sat in the hot waffle iron for the rest of the morning and most of the afternoon before we realized that slightly off smell was actually coming from our kitchen, not outside. You can see the completely charred waffle there. It ended up ruining the non-stick coating on the iron, so we had to buy another one.
