the Uckelmans, Summer 2006

Friday the conference arranged an excursion to Aquileia, where there is a cathedral whose initial foundations were built in the 4th C, on top of a 1st C Roman villa. Much of the 4th C part doesn't remain, and it was substantially rebuilt in the 11th century, when they raised the floor by about a meter. The roof dates from the 15th-16th C. It wasn't until earlier last century that the 11th-C floor was removed, and they found beneath it the largest Paleo-Christian mosaics. It's something like 290 square meters. It was amazing. I could've taken pictures of every single square.
