This gives you some idea of how large it was. It was done in sections, with each section being very different from the others - one had geometric designs, one had Biblical scenes, including Jonah and the whale, one was birds and animals, another was the heads of the patron and the family of the patron who helped finance it. Not all of the mosaic was designed for the church - some of it is just generic mosaic design that anyone could have ordered. The way that they can tell is that some of the patterns don't fit the space they've been put in, but rather are cut off in mid row. |
